What a Typical Day Looks Like
As a Higher Level Apprentice Quantity Surveyor at MTM Engineering, a typical day for me involves working with both the estimating and commercial team. My main focus is making sure the work we price is as accurate as possible and meets MTM standards
In my role as a Quantity Surveyor, I also get involved in discussions with different departments such as Health & Safety, Operations, and Engineering. This helps to ensure that jobs runs smoothly and that each project is successful.
Learning on the Job
One of the biggest things I’ve learned on the job, which you wouldn’t fully learn in a classroom, is how to communicate with other people while working on a project involving numerous teams. This includes working with colleagues across MTM as well as people outside the company.
That real-life experience of dealing with different teams and situations has been a big part of my development and is something you only really learn by being involved in live projects.
Combining College and Hands On Experience
My Higher-Level Apprenticeship combines college learning with hands-on experience by teaching me different aspects of Quantity Surveying, such as law and procurement. These are things you wouldn’t necessarily learn on site or in office but are still essential to the role.
Having both the academic side and the practical side working together has helped me better understand the full scope of Quantity Surveying.
Travel, Sites, and Support From MTM Engineering
Through my role as a Higher-Level Apprentice Quantity Surveyor, I’ve had opportunities to travel and work on different sites. I’ve visited different places ranging from Dublin to Brussel’s and Milan, and I’ve also had the chance to work from our three offices in Ireland.
MTM Engineering has supported me throughout my apprenticeship by accommodating my needs when it comes to work, study, and travel. Overall, everything is very well balanced, which makes it much easier to manage the different parts of the apprenticeship.
Learning Alongside Other Apprentices
Going through the Higher Level Apprenticeship alongside other apprentices at MTM Engineering has been a big part of the experience. We’re all learning on the job, supporting each other, and growing together, which makes the journey more enjoyable.
Advice for Future Apprentices
To anyone considering a Quantity Surveying apprenticeship at MTM Engineering, I would say it is personally a no-brainer. It’s an excellent opportunity to get ahead of others your age while gaining real experience and qualifications at the same time.
