Mastering Electrical Engineering Through Practical Experience

Lee Fearon - Higher Level Apprentice
Lee Fearon - Higher Level Apprentice

Can you share a little about your journey before joining our apprenticeship programme?

My name is Lee Fearon. And I am an apprentice Electrical Engineer with MTM Engineering. Before I started my HLA with MTM, I was in St Colman’s College, Newry, completing my A Levels in Construction and Environmental Technology.

From the start of GCSEs, I always knew I wanted to pursue an HLA in the construction industry. I never had the desire to go to University as I wanted to get out into the real world, and start making money, and gain valuable experience.

For me, I felt University would have been a waste of time. The HLA programme is perfect for me as I get to go to work and gain very valuable experience in a thriving, future-proof industry while also earning money. This allows me to enjoy a social life instead of having to take on a second job and take classes during the day, as you would have to in University.

Could you highlight some key experiences from your apprenticeship journey?

I was fortunate to visit a project we are working on in Milan during the summer and gain an understanding of the work we are doing. Before I went to site, I did not realise the scale of our projects. Being on site opened my eyes to the work we are doing and how my personal contributions impact both the site and the progress of the whole project. It showed me that I am a part of a team and can make impactful decisions based on my knowledge and the help of the other engineers guiding me through my work.

Are there any specific skills that you have developed, such as any tools or resources you have found most helpful in advancing your skills?

I have learned a lot of valuable skills during my time with MTM, such as:

  • Bluebeam Revu

  • Navisworks

  • Technical submissions

  • RFI submittals

  • Extended use of Excel and how to use all programmes to the best of their ability

  • The ability to read and properly understand drawings that are going onto site.

  • BIM360

  • How to navigate ACC Autodesk

Can you explain how mentorship has played a key role in your journey and how this has helped you?

Mentorship has played a key role in my journey. When I first began working with MTM Engineering, I stepped into a completely new world. My manager, Sean Fay, and the other qualified engineers have guided me through all the new aspects of being an electrical engineer with patience, ensuring I understand what I am doing instead of just rushing to get it done. Their willingness to take time out of their busy schedule to help me whenever and wherever they can has helped me progress more than I could have imagined. I have now been able to take on a lot of responsibility in my role and I do not feel like I have been babied at all but given respect and trust to learn.

What are three key pieces of advice you would give to future applicants looking to kickstart their career?

If I were to give three key pieces of advice to any future applicants looking to kickstart their career in electrical engineering, they would be:

  • Do not be afraid to ask any question, no matter how stupid it might sound to you. Everyone must start somewhere, and nobody knows everything.

  • Listen to everything being said and try to engage in conversations that you may feel above what you are doing. You never know what you might learn or how useful it could become.

  • Keep yourself well informed, and do not be afraid to speak even if you are not 100% sure you are right. The more times you are wrong, the more you are going to learn.
